Dallas’ new panhandling law isn’t perfect, but it’s a start | Opinion
A panhandler on an I-30 exit ramp on Cockrell Hill Road in Dallas on Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2022.We applaud the Dallas City Council for finally crafting new city ordinances to address panhandling, an issue that has been on and off council agendas for years., pedestrians will not be allowed on roadway medians less than 6 feet wide, in the middle of streets without medians and in clear zones.
Reasons for panhandling range from surviving to scamming, and no response is without flaws. In this case, we are concerned that the manpower exists to put teeth into the new ordinances. Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia made it clear that this will be a low priority for police, who obviously have bigger issues to consume the time of an understaffed force. And Interim City Marshal David Pughes said marshals will not be actively patrolling medians to issue people citations.
