Two sinkholes have appeared in a Northwest D.C. yard above a disintegrating pre-World War II pipe. The city and its water utility blame each other as a homeowner worries.

Two sinkholes that appeared last year in Lanphier’s yard, both above the pipe, grow larger with each rainstorm, she said. One has reached at least 11 feet deep while another that she thinks is about seven feet deep cuts beneath part of her driveway.

Like many older cities, D.C. has struggled to replace and repair its aging infrastructure. The median age for its water and sewer pipes is about 80 years, with some dating to the Civil War, although D.C. Water insists the problem is a DDOT-controlled culvert.Lanphier said the first sinkhole appeared in June.

“D.C. Water does not own this culvert and does not have any maintenance responsibilities” for it, the utility said in a statement this week.
