NEW: A Colorado Springs man was suffering from heat-related illness and was taken for help by helicopter, but he did not survive, according to the sheriff’s office.

A 52-year-old man died Saturday after he ran out of water while cycling on a new 32-mile mountain bike trail near Palisade, according to the Mesa County Sheriff’s office.Palisade Plunge trail

around 6:45 p.m. Saturday — a day when temperatures in the area reached a record high of 102 degrees. The Colorado Springs man was suffering from heat-related illness and was taken for help by helicopter, but he did not survive, according to the sheriff’s office. The three cyclists who stopped to help the man and called 911 were also out of water, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

“They started with a gallon of water each and ran out about 10 miles before the end of the trail,” the release said.The Mesa County Sheriff’s office cautioned that riders on the Palisade Plunge trail — which has very little shade — should carry at least 2.5 gallons of water per person during the summer. Electrolyte replenishments are also recommended, the sheriff’s office said.
