Our people have fought back and the red dress movement is one vehicle where we take back the control over our lives.

One of the participants was a high school student, Daleen Muskego. Later, she would marry Jeremiah Bosse and continue her studies at the University of Saskatchewan. She planned to be a teacher.

Her cousin was a friend of mine and worked for me as a freelancer. He told me that they had no leads and the trail had gone cold. The former members of the Circle of Voices were also worried about her departure. Thursday was the national day of awareness for missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. It was a day to remember and mourn the loss of those women who have gone missing and been murdered. Events including marches, speakers and ceremonies were held across the country.

While many of the perpetrators are Indigenous men, we can’t overlook that a frightening number are non-Aboriginal men with little or no knowledge of the Indigenous woman they have assaulted and killed. They have bought the racist narrative that Indigenous women are easy, vulnerable and expendable. No matter how low they are in the pecking order, they feel that they are superior to an Indigenous woman.
