Indianapolis police announced more than 200 license plate readers will be up and running by the end of the week, with more to come.
Police said the license plate readers will be deployed as the following:182 license plate readers for districts outside of downtown.
The cameras capture all license plate numbers that come into view at a specific location and time. The data, which includes pictures of the vehicle, is then uploaded to a central server. Data from the cameras are purged 30 or 180 days later. Commander Matthew Thomas, of Indianapolis police, said the cameras have been useful in cases ranging from domestic violence, homicides, missing persons, reckless driving and fatal hit-and-runs. He added the technology can provide more specific details about a vehicle to investigators after a crime occurs or a person is at risk, versus relying on vague descriptions.
“In the most basic sense, this technology serves as a digital witness, serving in the same way as a resident standing on the sidewalk taking a picture of every passing vehicle with their cellphone, except it operates 24/7,” he said.investigation into the shooting of three Dutch soldiersWhen asked about privacy concerns with the cameras, Thomas responded that police can only search license plate reader data if there’s a crime that sparks an investigation.
Indianapolis City-County Councilor Jared Evans, whose district covers the southwest side of Indianapolis, said he supports the license plate readers and noted the the heavily-trafficked West Washington Street falls in his jurisdiction.
