David Mundee Providence Christian girls and boys cross country teams have dominated AHSAA section meets the last four years with team titles each year.High school cross country teams throughout the state run in section meets on Thursday seeking to qualify for the AHSAA State Championships in Moulton on Saturday, Nov. 11. The top four teams in each section advance to state plus the top six individuals on non-qualifying teams.
People are also reading… The two Dothan schools – Houston Academy and Providence Christian – are expected to battle for the girls top spot similar to how they have done at the state meet the last two years.At last year’s section meet, the Eagles won with HA third behind Orange Beach. Individually, eight of the top 10 girls finishers from last year’s section meet return for this year’s event, led by defending champion Millie Talmadge of Providence Christian, who was also last year’s state runner-up.
The two are among seven teams running at the section meet. The others are Auburn, Central-Phenix City, Opelika, Prattville and Smiths Station. The Auburn girls were state runner-ups last year.Gabriella Baker, who has had a strong season, and Alexander Vasquez for Dothan are back after qualifying for state last year.Class 5A, Section 1Area teams Charles Henderson and Headland compete at the Class 5A, Section 1 meet at Bay Minette’s Bicentennial Park.
Other teams participating are Florala, Francis Marion, Horseshoe Bend, Pleasant Home, Red Level, St. Luke’s and University Charter.Geneva, Zion Chapel win CCS5: The Geneva girls and Zion Chapel boys won the regular-season ending CCS Meet 5 this past Saturday at the Andalusia Covington County Schools Track.
On the boys side, Zion Chapel had five runners in the top 13 and easily won the team title. The Rebels had 28 points with Geneva the runner-up and Pleasant Home third. Straughn , T.R. Miller and Opp rounded out the field.
