Hospitals are struggling to maintain safe staffing levels because the Omicron Covid variant is sending huge numbers into self-isolation
- which also runs six hospitals in its area - with an internal letter warning it is "unable to maintain safe staffing levels", leading to "compromised care".
Critical incidents are thought to have been declared at up to four other hospital trusts in the UK, with the chief executive of NHS Providers saying approximately half a dozen have done so. It allows them to "carry on providing the services that it needs to provide, particularly the critical and essential services".He refuted claims up to a quarter of staff could be off work with coronavirus, telling Sky News the data does not suggest this to be the case.
