Montgomery County schools will close Monday because of power outages stemming from plane crash
A small plane sits suspended some 10 stories high on Sunday, after it crashed into high-tension power lines in Montgomery Village, a northern suburb of Gaithersburg, Md. A small plane became entangled in high-voltage power lines in suburban Maryland on Sunday evening, cutting power to nearly 100,000 homes or businesses and plunging rescuers into a complex, hours-long effort to safely remove the two people aboard.
The plane became entangled in high-voltage power lines north of Montgomery Village in Gaithersburg about 5:40 p.m., fire officials said. Late Sunday night, Pepco said it had not yet determined a time for when power would be restored. Maryland State Police identified the pilot as Patrick Merkle, 65, of Washington, and his passenger as Jan Williams, 66, of Louisiana. Both the pilot and the passenger are reportedly unharmed inside the aircraft awaiting rescue. The Sunday evening crash occurred at a Pepco transmission line near Rothbury Drive and Goshen Road in the Gaithersburg/Montgomery Village area, according to utility and rescue officials. Plans to rescue the occupants of the plane involve grounding the nearby cables, or discharging any current in them into the ground. Then, Goldstein said, the plane could be firmly fixed to the tower, stabilizing it enough to permit rescues.
