Two of North Jersey’s top cover bands join forces for what should be a fun evening of nostalgia and singalongs.
The members of Hey Bulldog are, from left, Pat Bridge, Gerry Rosenthal, Jeff Fernandes, Pete Horvath and Tommy Strazza. They'll be playing the music of the Beatles at White Eagle Hall on Friday, May, 19, 2023. What do the Beatles and Grateful Dead have in common? No, it’s not what they liked to smoke.
Rosenthal has long been a familiar face in the Hudson County club scene, performing with Big Wake and the Gerry Rosenthal Trio. In Hey Bulldog, he’s joined by four top-flight musicians who have also enjoyed long careers in the area: guitarists Pete Horvath and Tommy Strazza, drummer Jeff Fernandes, and percussionist Pat Bridges. Everyone contributes on vocals.
“We don’t have even a keyboard player, just two guitars, bass, drums and a singer,” he continued. “So, a lot of parts we have to recreate, mostly with guitars. And I think it makes it more interesting for the audience to see how we play something on the scale of ‘Sergeant Pepper’ or ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ with just five guys.”
“The Dead can be terribly polarizing,” singer/guitarist Jeff Greenspan noted. “People usually either love them or hate them. I think that’s because a lot of people have this idea of the Grateful Dead in their heads; they just think of them as a band that does long jams -- every song lasts 40 minutes and they all sound the same. But the music is really a lot more accessible than you think.”
“There’s a lot of baggage attached to the Grateful Dead and while it might be much broader, it’s similar to jazz music,” Greenspan continued. “A lot of people who don’t know anything about jazz think they don’t like it, and it might even be daunting to get into it. I feel that it can be very, very daunting to get into the Dead, too. But they’re just good songs at the end of the day.”
