Shane McAnally, hitmaking country songwriter and judge of NBC's 'Songland,' on how he went from unsigned artist to mega-producer and Nashville mogul
Shane McAnally was in the closet and floundering. As a 25-year-old country singer in 1999, he had seen moderate success with a couple of songs about love and heartbreak, but a couple of years later he had two failed record deals under his belt and was listless.
“I would pray for another dream,” he says. “I felt like I had just been very victimized. Like, ‘Why is no one getting this?’” Then, about a decade later after a stint living in L.A., he started living as an openly gay man and letting other artists record his songs. Suddenly, he says, the world was full of possibilities.
