The purchase price was not previously revealed due to 'commercial sensitivity'
The decision to buy the Pyramids and the Grange shopping centres was made at a Policy and Resources committee meeting on April 27, subject to risk and compliance checks being carried out by council officers before going ahead with the purchase. The purchase was completed in May but Wirral Council didn't reveal how much it had paid for the shopping centre at the time citing commercial sensitivity.
Wirral Council purchased the shopping centre as part of its Birkenhead 2040 plan to revitalise the town. The purchase of the shopping areas includes the former Argos and Conway Street car park, Princes Pavements, Borough Pavements and the M&S unit. The documentation dated to April before the council's purchase said one lease had also already expired but they remained due to a "holding over" agreement with the landlord.
Next declined to comment if the store in the shopping centre is one it is expecting to close. Wirral Council were also approached for comment.
