The authority is not hosting an official screening for the World Cup final which represents a missed opportunity
England are in the final of the World Cup this weekend for the first time since 1966, yet it doesn't seem as though the nation's eardrums are bleeding yet from Baddiel and Skinner. There seems to be great hesitancy about a bank holiday in the event that England win and Prince William, the President of the FA, is watching the game on telly instead of being at the final in person.
Cynical as it may seem, we have to turn to the fact that it just so happens the England players on the pitch in Australia this Sunday will be women. Not just any group of women, but a team that already romped home in the Euros last year, overturning decades of hurt as part of a sensational winning streak under the management of Sarina Wiegman.
The fact that such a superb team will be representing our country on the world stage in a prestigious football final surely seems cause for celebration, especially when goalkeeper Mary Earps is from our own neck of the woods. Unfortunately, Nottingham City Council says its officers are too preoccupied preparing for Nottingham Carnival.
The question inevitably arises as to whether the council would have taken this decision if it was the men's World Cup final that England were contesting. Maybe they would have, hopefully it's a problem we have to wrestle with in future years, but when observing the crowds at women's matches, it's a game that often seems far more conducive to a good day out for all the family.
