More people need to be given a chance in technology, and tech companies have the ability to help inspire others.
. Let's use charity to make our industry more equitable—as well as find better ideas and new leaders.Far too many tech companies view giving as an afterthought or something they need to do for good public relations. While small steps are helpful, I believe tech companies should give until it hurts.
If each tech company committed to giving just between 5% and 10% more, it would make an enormous difference. Helping to cultivate systemic change requires more than just small efforts. It saddens me that many successful technology and services companies give very little to causes that improve people's lives—which would strengthen our economy.
Let's walk the walk. It is not about optics or perceptions; it's about how we have made someone's life better for them, their families and their communities. Skills development is key to changing an individual's future so they can change the future for those around them.I've been fortunate to have a career working with tech pioneers and building businesses. I've created a good life, worked with amazing people, chased opportunities and continued to learn and grow.
Tech is far too often an insular culture that only considers exit strategies and stocks. Historically, tech was an independent, creative culture of idealists championing the greater good. I believe the culture needs to shift back to putting that greater good before the needs of the few. If we in the technology and services community reflect on the opportunities we were given, we won't hesitate to invest in the future of our youth and underserved communities.
I'm not suggesting everyone needs to give half of their profits, but I will say everyone needs to do more. The future of our industry—if not our collective culture—relies on a thriving tech sector giving back, creating opportunity and investing in skills development and the future.
