Committee endorses six community support officers dedicated to Transit.
A move towards a uniformed security presence on Saskatoon city buses has received a significant show of support.Members of council’s transportation committee on Tuesday voted unanimously in support of a recommendation to council to expand the existing Community Support Officer program onto Saskatoon Transit. Ward 1 Coun, Darren Hill was absent.
“Don’t put a price on safety,” Pederson urged the committee as he said the union backed a proposal to add six CSOs spread across terminals and routes that see the most incidents.the Broadway, Downtown and Riversdale business districts since 2012. They provide assistance to people in need, and respond to lower-level incidents such as public intoxication or loitering that typically don’t garner a police response.
Ward 3 Coun. David Kirton, whose ward includes the Confederation Transit terminal, urged councillors to support adding the CSOs, pointing to future plans for a multimillion-dollar bus-rapid transit system, and cautioning transit would only be appealing if it’s safe and reliable.
