Serious Preston council blunder sees redacted immigration report made public
One of the men mentioned in the report was believed to be a victim of human trafficking, having told officers that he had entered the country illegally and was working 12 hours a day for £10. The names of a man who was allowed to remain living in the property during a closure order was also able to be seen.
The mistake raises concern that the release of the sensitive details could have put the people mentioned at risk of harm. The council had also chosen to redact the names of members of the public who submitted comments owing to police suggestions that the business owner was "aggressive and violent", but identifying details could be seen through the same method.
As is standard process, the documents were uploaded onto the council website for the public to be able to view, with sensitive details including the above information and the names of immigration officers who attended the premises redacted. However, while it appeared to be blacked out, the redacted information could be been seen by anybody who simply copy and pasted the entire text into a new document.
