An estimated 280,000 Pennsylvanians age 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s and about half a million family caregivers bear the burden of the disease across the state.

There is no cure, and current medications fall short. The newest drug, Aduhelm, was approved last year but has not yet been shown to improve symptoms of the disease.

“The area where we choose to put the electrode depends on the symptoms that we want to control,” he said. “Alzheimer’s is a degenerative condition, and as a result you’re chasing after a worsening brain,” said Dr. Ali Rezai, a neurosurgeon at West Virginia University Medicine and director of WVU’s Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute. “It’s a challenge for any therapeutic.”

The procedure involves creating a small hole in the skull to implant the electrode. While the surgery is generally considered safe, it can come with complications, such as bleeding or infection near the implant. Seizures are also possible. The electrode connects via a thin wire to a small device implanted in the chest that sends the electrical pulses to the brain.
