'I'm sure I am not alone in asking how does this happen? How in the UK does a two-year-old child die from exposure to mould in his home?' Coroner Joanne Kearsley

Awaab Ishak died after mould was not treated and prevented at his home by Rochdale Boroughwide Housing , a coroner has ruled. The toddler, from Rochdale, died aged two on December 21, 2020.

Ms Kearsley told the court that she had taken into account testimony from housing ombudsman Richard Blakeway, who found an 'over-reliance being placed on the contribution of a tenant's lifestyle as the cause' of damp and mould.

She told the court: "Awaab Ishak died as a result of a severe respiratory condition caused due to prolonged exposure to mould in his home environment. Action to treat and prevent the mould was not taken. His severe respiratory condition led to Awaab going into respiratory arrest. She also found that remedial works should have been taken between July and December 2020, when the legal claim was believed to be ongoing, while there was concerns about information being shared between groups involved in health and social care. Awaab had been discharged from Royal Oldham Hospital the day before his death - with mum Aisha Amin told to take Awaab back to hospital if he became unwell again.
