Timoteo Sports, a faith-based youth sports organization in Hunting Park that uses sports to reach and build community among youth in North Philly, held its annual cornhole fundraiser on Saturday.

On Saturdays and Sundays in the spring, the fields at the Lighthouse Sport Complex are home to flag football, but on a warm, breezy Saturday, Sept. 16, it was cornhole that took center stage.

On Sept. 16, the Kensington-based nonprofit with deep roots in the community and a long history of developing young leaders through its youth sports leagues was holding its Third Annual Cornhole Classic fundraiser to support its work. Community stakeholders most impacted by the opioid crisis decided which local groups would receive grants to decrease harm

“That was just a huge investment from the city, and looking forward to hopefully more and bigger grants in the future,” said Jennifer Somerville, Timoteo’s new director of development. Take Buddy Martinez and Cornell MacDonald. Both first joined Timoteo 16 years ago as teenagers in some of its first flag football seasons. Martinez came after his brother and another friend from their church started playing in the league, while MacDonald found Timoteo through the youth pastor at his church.“I’ve been there ever since,” said MacDonald, who turns 34 in November and is now a flag football coach.

“Kids crave a place to belong,” said MacDonald. “A lot of times, we would think off the top of our head that kids can go home and have a comfortable environment, but their home environment isn’t always the best.”
