The Diamondbacks’ top-of-the-lineup force is meticulous and detail-oriented to a fault — but he has very few on a baseball field.
Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll is the likely NL rookie of the year. “He comes to the park every day with a very specific focus,” teammate Jace Peterson says. ARLINGTON, Tex. – One day last winter, when they were working out in Arizona, Diamondbacks first baseman Pavin Smith watched Corbin Carroll do something unexpected.
“He’s very routine-oriented and organized. He’s got his computer and a list that says like, ‘morning walk’,” Smith said. “And he checks everything off. All day. Every day.”That relentless meticulousness and dogged adherence to routine are what teammates and coaches say make Carroll, the likely National League rookie of the year, so different.
Carroll does not smile much, at least not before, after or during baseball games. He gives the sense that he is all business, and that is because mostly he is. Even at the All-Star Game in Seattle this past summer, when veterans and young players alike shed the trappings of normal gamedays to soak up the moment, Carroll seemed determined to hit on his schedule, to grab food when he normally grabs food — all baseball, all the time.
“He had his phone there, too. I would tell him things, and he would say, ‘Oh, I have to put that in my phone.’ He asked me about everything from team leadership to base running. I thought, ‘Man, he’s asking great questions.’ ”
