A recall election against two members of the board's conservative majority is officially on.
Critics say policies requiring schools to alert families if their child identifies as transgender or non-binary could put the student in danger if their parents were unaware. | Robyn Beck/AFP via Getty ImagesTwo conservative Southern California school board members are facing a recall over their role in the firing of a superintendent and the adoption of a transgender student policy that critics say violates the privacy rights of children.
“I feel confident that we will be successful,” said Darshan Smaaladen, a parent of a student in the district and an organizer of the recall. “It feels good to accomplish something that many recall initiatives have failed to achieve.” Organizers of a recall campaign in Temecula, where trustees also fired the superintendent and adopted a new transgender student policy, have until Dec. 8 to qualify a recall election in that city northeast of San Diego.
At least five districts have adopted similar policies, and the state has filed a legal challenge against one of them. Federal courts are also considering challenges to policies that prohibit school staff from alerting parents if there is a change to their child’s gender identity.
