Colorado’s current law reflects outdated and wrong understanding of sexual assault, advocates said
Colorado’s “very confusing, very outdated, and archaic” law about felony sexual assault, as Rep. Matt Soper put it, is poised for an update after it cleared an initial committee unanimously Tuesday.
“These are far different times in the way that we see sexual assault, understand sexual assault, and as a matter of fact, handle sexual assault in our very own statutes,” she said. Jessica Dotter, who specializes in sexual assault policy for the Colorado District Attorneys’ Council, said the current law consistently confuses juries charged with deliberating crimes that are already among the most difficult to prosecute.
