ConocoPhillips Alaska said it has identified and controlled the source of a North Slope natural gas leak that was first detected March 4.

An ice-covered ConocoPhillips sign at a drilling site in Nuiqsut, Alaska on Feb. 9, 2016.

The waste disposal well was intended to be used for the regulated disposal of oil field waste, the video said, adding that the company had started drilling operations on the well in late January.Rebecca Boys, a company spokeswoman, said by email that the cause of the release is still under investigation. She wrote the shallow reservoir was found to be the sole gas source.

The volume of gas released into the subsurface layers beneath the CD1 pad that was not directed into the company’s Alpine central facility was estimated at 7.2 million standard cubic feet, according to the video. It stated that most of the gas released into the subsurface layers was “believed to have escaped into the atmosphere between March 4 and March 8. Trace amounts of gas may continue to escape to the atmosphere over time.

A report from the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, dated Friday, listed the cause of the release as under evaluation and said that future plans included a continuation of “source remediation operations.”
