Iowa’s caucuses touched off at 7 p.m. Central on Monday, with results that could reset the Democratic presidential primary before it races to the next nominating contest in New Hampshire next week
Everyone is going to have to wait. The Iowa caucus results have been delayed, even as turnout appeared not to reach the record levels that some predicted.At this point in 2016, roughly 85 percent of the precincts had reported delegate totals. This year it's zero.
The results delay came after anecdotal reports from precinct caucus chairs early Monday who said they were having issues with their caucus night reporting apps. The app, developed by the Democratic Party, helps the chairs do the math to help figure out which candidates will meet the viability thresholds Monday night. And it’s a tool to feed the ultimate results to the party in real-time.
The specter of the Republican president has hung heavily over Iowa, where activists canvassed neighborhoods and strung balloons for campaign parties Monday even as Trump’s impeachment trial unfolded live on TV. But Sanders was competing for progressive support with Warren, who put staff in the state far earlier than most of her opponents and has built a vast organization here. Polling had consistently showed the race incredibly close.
Biden, a moderate, remains the frontrunner nationally. But a poor showing in Iowa could weaken him significantly — especially if it is followed by a loss next week in New Hampshire. If, on the other hand, Biden is able to coalesce support on Monday night, he may not only hold himself steady, but pick up steam. His campaign is widely expected to benefit Monday from the second-choice votes of moderates whose candidates fail to meet the 15 percent viability threshold.
