One Western diplomat told Sky News that Iran's rulers have lost credibility and all popular support and will be unable to sustain their grip on power indefinitely but there is no way of knowing how long it can continue ruling the country.
Iran has seen months of unrest in which hundreds of protesters have been killed and thousands jailed.
Protesters are hoping economic action including strikes and stores being shut down will help bring down the government, as well as nationwide protests. So far they have stayed on the sidelines. The financial cost of striking in the current economic climate may be a price many are unwilling to pay, whatever their opposition to the country's regime. One Western diplomat told Sky News Iran's rulers have lost credibility and all popular support and will be unable to sustain their grip on power indefinitely but there is no way of knowing how long it can continue ruling the country.
