'I think other political groups need to take a look at themselves too regarding attendance'
Questions have been raised about Conservative councillors’ commitment to a Pendle leisure centre review and the council’s Labour-Lib-Dem administration’s hope to keep three centres open in Colne, Nelson and Barnoldswick.
In Pendle, Labour and the Lib-Dems took control of the borough in May. Then the leading Executive declared its ambition to keep open Nelson’s Wavelengths, Colne’s Pendle Leisure Centre and Barnoldwick’s West Craven Sports Centre. The council’s Overview & Scrutiny Committee is looking at options to boost financial viability and potentially change some leisure activities offered. The review was discussed at the latest full council meeting.
During questions, Conservative Coun Martyn Stone asked: “Can the leader tell us whether those three centres will be kept open even if it’s not financially viable or if commitment is dependent on financial viability?” “The basis for asking for this review was to maximise income and reduce costs through energy efficiencies and other measures. Does the leader agree that asking Overview & Scrutiny to lead on this would, hopefully, get the whole council involved in planning future opportunities? We are looking forward to working with the Conservatives to get to the point where we have three affordable leisure centres.
