With the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade, and the resulting loss of access to safe abortion care for millions of Americans, it is more critical than ever to prevent unplanned pregnancies. The use of an effective method of contraception is the best way to do so.
While numerous contraceptives for women exist, including implants, pills, intrauterine devices and vaginal rings, a substantial proportion of women do not have a method they can use safely or without significant side effects. For example, the pillbe recommended for women with a history of blood clots or women over 35 who smoke. Many women experience side effects from contraceptives, such as abnormal bleeding, weight gain, acne and low libido.
The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Development and the Population Council, together with 15 centers across the globe, including sites in North and South America, Europe and Africa, are currently conducting a study in over 400 couples of a hormonal contraceptive gel that men apply to their shoulders once a day for 18 to 24 months. As investigators helping to conduct this trial, we know that men are interested and engaged in using these methods.
As developers of male contraceptives, the most frequent question we are asked is: What is taking so long? Investment in male contraceptive development has dropped compared with prior decades when large pharmaceutical entities and nongovernmental agencies were investors. Today, the National Institute of Child Health and Development and academia provide the vast majority funding for male contraceptive development; lack of funding slows progress at both the innovation and clinical testing stages.
