Cite and release, which would be expanded and codified under Prop. A, does not decriminalize anything.
Voters should get behind Proposition A, which will expand and codify cite and release in San Antonio. In 2007, the Republican-controlled Texas Legislature passed an amendment to the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure allowing police officers to issue a ticket for certain low-level, nonviolent offenses instead of arresting the alleged offender.
Nothing in this long-standing policy was particularly controversial until it was included in Proposition A. Unfortunately for the people of San Antonio, this bad-faith argument against cite and release has been adopted by the local chambers of commerce, the San Antonio Police Officers’ Association and even the mayor.
