Veterinarian Cherice Ross will read from her 'Real Doctors' children's book series at the Barnes & Noble in Encinitas on Aug. 27

and Roth will be reading from both of them at the Barnes & Noble in Encinitas on Saturday, Aug. 27. The first book finds Roth’s real-life sons, Tristan and Cooper, talking to a friend about why their mother is a “real doctor,” even if her patients are furred, feathered or scaled.

“I woke up at 3 a.m., wrote a Post-It note that said, ‘What is a real doctor?’, and then I went back to sleep. When I woke up the next morning and saw the note, I came downstairs and wrote the first draft in 30 minutes. It was just so clear to me,” said Roth, who is the chief veterinary officer with Fuzzy, a digital pet-care company.

When Roth was 8 years old, she asked an aunt to take her to a book signing by pioneering Black neurosurgeon Ben Carson. Despite her age, Roth had already read his autobiography, “Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story.” And when Roth met Carson, he told her that she had gifted hands, too. Roth had grown up loving animals, but she didn’t meet her first veterinarian until she was in her third year of college. Even then, the only thing she knew about the field was that getting into veterinary school was practically impossible.

“There was definitely this sense of being lonely. I missed the demographic because I was a woman of color, but also because of being older and being married.”
