Shaquille Leonard's season is over.
INDIANAPOLIS — Colts linebacker Shaquille Leonard underwent his second back surgery in the past six months on Tuesday, according to a report by the NFL Network’s Ian Rapaport, ending his season.
Leonard and the Colts had hoped his June surgery would fix the problems that have plagued his lower left leg dating back to his rookie season. Frustrated by the lack of progress in his left ankle and calf, Leonard could not practice during the team's offseason program, and during that period, doctors discovered the disc issue that led to the June surgery. Leonard missed the Colts' first three games while recovering from his surgery, then returned to the lineup against Tennessee, only to suffer a concussion and a broken nose when he took a hard hit from teammate Zaire Franklin after just 16 snaps.
The Colts need to get Leonard back to playing like himself. Indianapolis signed the linebacker to a five-year, $99.2 million contract extension last August, making Leonard the highest-paid linebacker in the NFL and the foundation for the defense for years to come.
