Coach Pres Holcumb's cancer battle pulls Kingwood girls soccer team closer
The Kingwood and Atascocita Girls Soccer teams show their support for Lady Mustangs coach Pres Holcomb, right, before the start of their District 22-6A matchup at Atascocita High School on Jan. 13, 2020.Kingwood girls soccer coach Pres Holcomb usually looks at his record at the end of each season. But doing so at a much earlier juncture this year, he noticed he was close to reaching 250 wins.
“It means that I have been coaching for a long time. I won’t tell you how many losses I have,” said Holcomb with a laugh. “Obviously, winning is fun, and we play to win. It’s a number, but as long as I can see the kids are getting better in the program, that’s more important. It’s nice to reach a milestone, and now we have to move on. It was great to celebrate with the girls. It was a special moment.
He made his way to Kingwood during the 2015-16 season and has continued the winning tradition ever since. For more than three years, he's gone up against something he wouldn't have imagined. During Christmas break in 2019, Holcomb was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer that had spread to his liver.Subsequent years of chemotherapy have made coaching a challenge, but Holcomb still manages to be at games and practices, intent on the goal of winning a district title and making it to the state tournament to compete for a championship.
