The Bailey Lane crossing in Grange has had been open since 1857 to take walkers from the south Cumbria town across the Furness Rail Line onto its famed Edwardian promenade
The council is set to make a decision on whether to send an order to the government to permanently close a level crossing in Grange that is ‘a danger to the public’ amid a long-running dispute.
“Network Rail wishes to close this pedestrian railway crossing because it believes it is a danger to the public and there is a safer alternative via the nearby underpass.” A public inquiry was held, and the inspector concluded in September 2022 that the order should not be implemented due to doubts over Network Rail’s data supporting their case. The inspector also recommended some changes to improve safety.
However, 13 individuals and organisations have submitted objections to the council over the order and legally the authority must submit the order to the Secretary of State for further consideration. The council can alternatively decide to abandon the order to close the crossing.
