Closing arguments aimed at convincing Harris County jurors how to punish David Temple, a former Katy football coach, in the 1999 killing of his pregnant wife have begun.

David Temple was convicted for the second time for the murder of his pregnant wife, Belinda Lucas Temple, in Aug. 2019, but the sentencing was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.Testimony in the Temple trial — most of which was heard during earlier trials in 2007 and 2019 — has stretched on for two weeks in the 178th District Court.
Temple had already served about nine years in prison — he was sentenced to life — after the 2007 murder conviction when an appellate court granted him a new trial, concluding that Harris County prosecutors at the time deprived him of a fair trial by deliberately withholding evidence about an alternative suspect.The witnesses in the latest trial have included relatives of Temple’s slain wife, as well as her son with the defendant.
