Cleveland City Council this week walked back a symbolic blockade against using a Slavic Village property to help build a new jail.

“The amended resolution no longer stands in opposition to the use of the CVIC land as the ‘swap site’ if the County’s negotiations are successful,” Ward 12 Councilwoman Rebecca Maurer,against any use of the site, said in a statement Wednesday. “The amended language does not change my strong opposition to the use of the Ward 12 land for the jail.”

Since then, the county has “made clear commitments to me and to the public,” that it will not place a jail in her ward, she said.in May to explain what it could look like if they turn the property into a shipping container yard. That is essential to freeing up property at 2700 Transport Road to build a new jail close to downtown in Ward 3, where the courts are expected to remain.

After learning one of the county’s economic development administrators also sits on the Greater Cleveland Community Improvement Corporation board, which is selling the industrial site, Maurer said she raised concerns about potential ethics violations, but the county allayed those, too.
