Cleveland is changing its employee health insurance plans to add gender-affirming care and more coverage for abortion services. The changes would apply to all or some of the 6,000 employees with city insurance, as well as roughly 32,000 family members.
CLEVELAND, Ohio –The city of Cleveland is changing its employee health insurance plans to add gender-affirming care and more coverage for abortion services.
The change was made public Monday during a meeting of Council’s Finance, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion committee, when officials in Mayor Justin Bibb’s Department of Human Resources were discussing details of city-offered health plans. Cleveland is self-insured, and offers two insurance plans: one through Medical Mutual, the other through Anthem.
The Anthem plan, however, only covered “therapeutic” abortions until now. The city’s requested changes will add “elective” abortions to the Anthem plan.
