Alex Murdaugh’s attorneys asked for a retrial in his murder case, saying Colleton County Clerk Rebecca Hill told jurors to be wary of the defense.

“There’s no choice but for the courts to grant a new trial,” Griffin said at a news conference Tuesday afternoon.

A “whisper campaign” regarding questionable behavior in the jury room compelled the attorneys to investigate the issue, they said, but jurors didn’t come forward to speak until after Hill published her“We were hitting brick walls until her book came out, and then jurors who were obviously not comfortable with how she handled matters were even less comfortable with her going on a book tour,” he said.

After speaking to one juror, the attorneys began “knocking on jurors’ doors,” to learn more and gather affidavits describing the instructions, Murdaugh attorney Dick Harpootlian said at the news conference. Jurors were “upset with the way things went” and “upset with the clerk,” he said. The attorneys declined to comment on whether they think Hill should retain her job or what, if anything, she should be charged with.
