With Israeli hostages and Palestinian civilians trapped inside Gaza, overseas family members of innocent people caught in the conflict feel powerless. Michelle Mann OZARK-“Bigger and better” was Melanie Simpson’s reaction as she watched hundreds come through the doors of the historic Holman House on Broad Street to view the 107 hand-crafted quilts on display throughout both floors of the mansion during the 53rd Annual Claybank Jamboree and Arts and Crafts Show Saturday.
People are also reading… For the inaugural quilt show last year, Simpson said she put out the call for quilts to display and worked with Dustin Case from D.C. Welding and Equipment Repair, who created the metal quilt display frames, and John Runkle, who created hanging quilt display trowels. A Viewers’ Choice award was presented to the quilter that received the most paper ballot votes from viewers. First Place Viewers’ Choice award winner was Linda Gentzyel with her “Leaves” quilt. Second Place winner was Julie Green with her “Double Wedding Ring” quilt. Third Place went to Paula Wiggins with her quilt named “Purple Joy” and Lisa Stallings with her quilt “Arizona” took fourth place. The Youngest Quilter Award was presented to Kathryn Moore, age 12, with her quilt titled “Chickens.
At the end of the long hall on the second floor of the Holman House, Elaine Davenport, Ruth Hayes and Carla Hayes sat around a quilting frame with a three-layered quilt stretched tight across it. The woman, all members of the Rocky Head Baptist Church quilting group, talked all day with visitors about the needle-crafting skill while they stitched.
Elaine Davenport said that although her mother and grandmother quilted, she never learned the skill as a child. “When I retired I wanted to learn to quilt and I found this group,” she said about the Rocky Head quilters she joined 10 years ago. “I had no idea how hard it is even thought I’d seen my mother and grandmother quilting for so many years. My mother’s stitches were perfect. I didn’t appreciate her stitching until I started quilting myself.
