Out of the 29,000 PGA professionals, Clay Myers was hand selected to be on a committee of 10 to help diversify the game of golf.
PLANO, Texas — On any day, you’ll find Clay Myers at The Clubs of Prestonwood-Hills. This is where he oversees the course and manages its day-to-day operations. You’ll also find him on the range working on his own swing. Clay is trying to perfect his game in a sport that cannot be perfected.
Now that his playing career is on pause, Myers is trying to grow the game differently by mentoring other black golfers to earn their PGA membershipHowever, it wasn’t that way back in 1961. Charlie Sifford broke the game’s racial barrier, becoming the first Black man to earn his PGA Tour card. His courage also opened the door for other Black golfers, including one of the greatest golfers of all time, Tiger Woods. That history is not lost on Myers, and it’s something he thinks about often.
From the time he swung his first club at 8 years old, won his first tournament or even drained his first hole-in-one, Myers’ journey has always led to a golf course. But his dreams of playing professionally nevber materialized until one defining moment after college. And he did. From the APGA Tour, the MENA Tour in the Middle East, to tours in China and South America, Myers traveled the world until he finally got his one and only shot at the PGA Tour in 2015.
