Housebuilders are yet to sign a contract with the Government almost six months after they agreed to a pledge to fix any dangerous buildings that they developed

ReporterPeople living in homes caught up in the cladding scandal are calling on the Government to force developers to make their buildings safe as they accuse housebuilders of “delaying tactics”.

As of last month, 49 major developers had signed a pledge agreeing to pay to fix buildings they had developed over the past 30 years.that these pledges would be turned into legally binding agreements within a month, however developers are yet to sign the contracts more than two months later. Cladding victims say new Housing Secretary Simon Clarke must now take on the issue and force developers to agree.

She is worried that the “constant changes” within the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities over the summer due, to the Conservative Party leadership campaign and Cabinet reshuffle by new Prime Minister Liz Truss, mean any progress made under Mr Gove will now be forgotten. Ms Truss appointed Mr Clarke to the role of Housing Secretary earlier this month in place of Greg Clark, who held the role since Mr Gove’s sacking in July.this week, Mr Clarke said he was “determined to finish the job my predecessors started”, adding that “responsible housebuilders are wasting no time in getting on with fixing those buildings”.

Last year, Irwell Valley issued the residents a £100,000 bill each for the work, which they now know they will not need to pay, however Mr Matthews said they were not given more information about when the work will be carried out.
