Democrats introduced a bill Thursday that would codify abortion rights in Colorado law.
, dubbed the Reproductive Health Equity Act. The bill declares access to reproductive health care a fundamental right, and if passed, it would prevent state and local governments from denying, restricting, discriminating against or interfering in a person’s right to use or refuse birth control, get an abortion or receive any other type of reproductive care. It also would not allow a fertilized egg, embryo or fetus to have independent rights under state law, often referred to as “personhood.
Sponsor Rep. Meg Froelich, D-Greenwood Village, said activists across the state have long been defending against attacks on abortion rights, particularly at the ballot box in Colorado. But after the Texas law was upheld that banned abortions at six weeks and deputized citizens to sue violators, as well as the possibility that the U.S. Supreme Court could overturn Roe v. Wade, they decided to take action.
