'Cities That Sing: Paris' with singer Renee Fleming will show off the beauty of the City of Light and opera in a screening Sunday at AMC Loews Fountains 18 in…
“I'm amazed at the number of commercials now that come on network television that are classical music and opera,” says Fleming. “We’re really trying to create a program for the general public: people who might be curious about it, or who are interested in the cities that we're looking at, or want a cultural experience.”
“What happens is that you now really feel the music,” he says. “It’s transcendent. You are there with the performer. People pay $250,000 to have a ticket at a private concert with 50 people with some of the top opera stars at a dinner. Not a joke; it really does happen. This is even more impressive than that.”
The series is roughly based on Stanley Tucci and the late Anthony Bourdain’s TV travelogues, with music taking the place of food. In Fleming, who is also chair of Stage Access’ artists advisory board, the producers found a perfect balance between brilliant artist and genial ambassador for the art form. Paris was an easy choice for her: she kept an apartment in Paris for a decade when her children were younger, and calls the city “the opera capital of the world.
