For those settled in British homes the season is proving to be a time of cultural exchange as host families and Ukrainians explain and share their different traditions
So instead of Ukrainian delicacies they will be getting a traditional carvery Christmas dinner with all the trimmings, prepared by Ms Davenport, a retired chef.
Ms Tkalich’s decision to turn down Ms Davenport’s offer of Ukrainian Christmas dishes for the day was only partly to do with her enthusiastic embrace of English culture. It was also about her separation from her relatives. Her hosts surprised her with a Christmas tree decorated while she was out. The gesture prompted Ms Tkalich her to respond with her favourite English word – “unbelievable”.
“She bought us a Christmas Ukrainian bauble, so we’ve put that on the tree,” Ms Davenport said. Ms Tkalich also plans to introduce the family to some Ukrainian carols. Since the Russian invasion on 24 February close to 8 million people have fled Ukraine and become refugees, according to the latest data from the UNHCR.
And as an honorary member of the Wearing family, Katya, who Ms Wearing said “doesn’t seem to have any family Christmas traditions that she’s keen to share with us” will experience the festive season their way.
