Christine McGuinness was forced to defend herself after heckler called autism 'nonsense' and 'a label' in verbal attack at the launch of BBC2's Pilgrimage: The Road Through North Wales
Christine McGuinness is taking part in BBC Two’s Pilgrimage: The Road Through North Wales and has filmed her spiritual journey with fellow celebrities Michaela Strachan, Spencer Matthews, Eshaan Akbar, Amanda Lovett, Tom Rosenthal and Sonali Shah.
“As soon as I met Tom, I thought, ‘He’s definitely autistic,’” says Christine. “Being autistic isn’t a bad thing. You might need to get extra help in certain places. “Tom absolutely magnifies with how much information he can take in, how he speaks, the way he dresses. He’s quite quirky, he likes to be alone quite a lot. I just felt comfortable enough to be able to speak to him about it.
“I did find that rude,” says Christine. “I felt like I had to say something. Part of my job as being an advocate and a mum to autistic children is to speak up when I need to and I’ve never felt so much like I had to speak up as I did then.” She says the experience brought home to her that an enormous amount of work has to be done to make society inclusive – but it is a challenge she is more than ready to take on. “It just shows that we’ve still got a really long way to go,” says Christine.
