Chris Reed: In a post-truth world, it's a war of liars vs. liars. And it will get worse. [Opinion]
It’s stunning how much open lying is being done by people who know they are dealing in untruths. Instead of the annoying but less offensive “whataboutism” — bringing up some unrelated alleged dirt about the other side of the political scrum when one of its denizens cites embarrassing facts about your side — many pundits, politicians and policy experts are willing to just make things up. They know their side won’t hold it against them. They also know the other side will also make stuff up.
a broad, serious federal investigation that included emails from 2014 showing the younger Biden hoping to trade on the impression he cultivated of having influence within the Obama administration when his father was vice president.story illustrating Hunter Biden’s extreme sleaziness.
But the problem for bashers of both the media and Biden is that their side is even busier in its open lying. Fox News pretended that COVID-19 was no big deal for two years, with its death toll climbing toward 1 million Americans, then segued into pretending that Ukraine was responsible for its being invaded by Russia — not, yunno, the nation that launched the invasion.
The splendid truth-teller Matt Taibbi, a liberal who dissects the media with more skill and honesty than anyone else, is onto something when he likens the facile lying of both the left and right to the OrwellianBut here’s the bad news: The political schism in America is only likely to get worse in coming years.
