China rebuffs WHO proposal to investigate 'lab leak theory’ in second phase of its probe into the origins of the coronavirus amid soaring China-US tensions

Staff members in protective suits stand at Hubei Provincial Hospital of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine where members of the World Health Organization team tasked with investigating the origins of the coronavirus disease are visiting, in Wuhan, Hubei province, China, January 29, 2021.

The comments come in response to a WHO proposal, presented on Friday, for further investigation into the origins of the virus that would include audits of laboratories and markets in the city of Wuhan. Dismissed as a right-wing conspiracy theory and vehemently rejected by Beijing, the lab leak theory has been gaining momentum.
