Following a campaign by organisations including the Centre for Women’s Justice, the UK Government is set to introduce 'Daisy’s Law'. This will mean children who were born as a result of rape are to be recognised by law as victims of crime.
The amendments will apply to all children born as a result of rape, no matter what age they are
England and Wales will become among the first countries in the world to put the recognition of children born in such circumstances as victims into law. Carvel Bennett was found guilty of the historical rape in August 2021, in part due to ‘Daisy’, who is now in her forties, allowing her DNA to be used to convict.Describing her work as ‘tireless’, the CWJ said in a statement: ‘The change in law will entitle individuals who believe that they were born as a result of rape to make a complaint to the police, in their own right – and to receive information and access support in the same way as any other victim of crime.
‘She hopes in the future there will be better understanding of their experiences, and that children born of rape will be better supported to overcome the trauma surrounding their birth.’
