Paul Mercer was jailed in 1977 after being convicted of raping and murdering a child
A convicted rapist and murderer died from Covid after complaining about having to self-isolate because of his existing medical conditions.
Mercer had a number of pre-existing medical conditions, including peripheral vascular disease , COPD, asthma, deep vein thrombosis, dementia and poor mental health and so, when Covid restrictions were imposed in March 2020, he was identified as being high risk.In 2021, Mercer received two doses of the Covid vaccination and in September he was told to self-isolate after being taken to hospital with a pain in his arm.
A report published by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman this month revealed that prison staff had noted Jones was often angry while in jail and he had to be restrained on his way to hospital. All deaths in prison are investigated by the ombudsman in order to ensure that any issues around the care the deceased person received in custody are raised and that any lessons to be learned are highlighted and shared.
The report stated: "It is likely that Mr Mercer caught COVID-19 at Wymott as he had not left the prison in the previous four weeks before he tested positive.35. The clinical reviewer concluded that the healthcare Mr Mercer received at Wymott was of a variable standard, and partially equivalent to that which he could have expected to receive in the community.
