Police asked any witnesses to contact authorities as the investigation continued.
The accident occurred around noon on Spring Valley Road, near Memorial Park, in Maywood, according to borough police Chief Terence Kenny.
A Honda Civic was headed south on Spring Valley Road while a delivery van had stopped in front of a house also facing south, the chief said. That blocked the view of the sidewalk in front of the van. The child ran into the road in front of the stopped delivery van and was hit by the Honda, according to Kenny. The 25-year-old Englewood resident behind the wheel immediately stopped and stayed at the scene.
“Based on several witness accounts and the aforementioned traffic investigation, it appears to have been a serious and unfortunate accident,” Kenny said in an email. “As of this time, no traffic summonses will be issued to the driver.” The child was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, according to authorities. An update on the child’s condition was not immediately available.Police asked any witnesses to the crash to call 201-845-8800.
