Edinburgh School Uniform Bank warned councillors that some are in 'dire straits' as school uniform has become 'divisive and a cause of enormous stress, shame and exclusion.'
An Edinburgh charity has claimed that children across the city are increasingly missing school due to families not being able to afford uniforms.
Julia Grindley, who runs the charity said that children are "missing school because they have no shoes" and parents are keeping them away "because they are ashamed". Edinburgh Live reports that the charity, which was set up in 2015 to cover those "falling through the cracks", has noticed an increase in the number of families in financial difficulty and has expanded operations to as a "mainstream service".
She added: "There's a lot of great work being done around attendance but we believe that issues around clothing need more attention."
