It’s World Hippo Day -- a day to celebrate all things hippopotamus -- and the perfect day to check in on Ohio’s world-wide media sensation, Fiona. It’s her survival story -- and massive personality -- that made Fiona a worldwide phenomenon.
We checked in with Cincinnati’s Senior Zookeeper Jenna Wingate to find out more about the world’s most famous hippo.
“She has a lot of energy. She likes to follow Bibi and Tucker around, has hippo toys to keep her busy and loves to interact with guests, especially if they’re holding a camera,” Wingate explained. “Since hippos are nocturnal, zoo guests will often find Fiona sleeping in her pool to protect her skin from the sun, but she is very aware that visitors are there to see her and will come to the glass to put on a show when someone arrives.
“She still loves to be around people and loves scents like coffee and peanut butter breath, and she is still a typical five-year-old. She loves big puzzle feeders that she pushes around so that food falls out of them,” said Wingate. “She is “perfectly healthy, just small for her age,” said Wingate, “and despite her small size, she is, technically an adult, though she can continue to grow until she is 25 years old. She could live to be 40-50 years old, though that is difficult to predict since there is no data to indicate how her size would affect her longevity.”
