"They scan from school to school, building to building, to be the extra eyes on what is going on. The schools alert the staff if they see something," said Chris Baker, the Director of Safety and Security and CCS.
"We are finding these things before people are hurt," said Baker. "It's alarming, but if we can get that item from that student before something happens, I say it's a win."Right now, the district has 60 metal detectors at its high schools. This month, it is upgrading them to advanced screening detectors like what you see at Lower.com Field.
"It's an upgraded system that gives us the electronic video imaging of people as they enter our schools. If they bring anything dangerous or unwarranted into our schools, we are able to immediately address it," said Baker.Baker said "no comment" when asked if he would like armed security and if the district is looking into it.
Even with all of this technology, Baker says the best way to keep kids safe is through the relationship the staff builds with its students and parents.
